About

Hello!

Welcome to the History of Education website. We are 3 second year students studying at University of Leeds, taking part in the FOAR2000 research placement. Gary and Lily study History whilst Fahim studies Liberal Arts, yet we all met for the first time in September 2017 sharing a common interest in British history.

We began this project with a goal to become independent and confident researchers, which we have all realised is harder than it may have first seemed. We have been given the task to create a finding aid for the hundreds of undocumented children's exercise books, textbooks, lesson plans and school magazines donated to the museum of History of Science, Technology and Medicine (HSTM). Whilst rifling through these sources, we were most excited by the hundreds of Holly Leaf magazines by the City Grammar in Sheffield, spanning from the 1930s to the 1970s. Our research has experienced lots of twists and turns, however we settled on the focus of gender in education, using these magazines to give an insight into British student experience.

We hope that this website will help other budding historians like us, whether you are at university, or still in school, it is our hope that we can help others learn something new, just a little part of Great Britain's history!
